The Biggest Mistakes writing Dating Profiles

For years, I treated my dating profile like an overstuffed dresser. I stuffed as many words as I could fit into the small window of text. And then, I’d start complaining about why I wasn’t getting any matches:

If someone wrote a book on dating app mistakes, I’m the perfect example. But over the years, I kinda started figuring it out. In this email, I’ll go over two insights I had.

Evoke Feelings

Dating is a play of emotions. Your content doesn’t matter unless it evokes feelings. Your goal with your profile should be to evoke a feeling whether it’s excitement, curiosity, humor etc.

The key to this is being descriptive and detailed. The most common I see is “I love eating.” This doesn’t do anything because (1) every human being has to eat (2) it doesn’t tell me anything about the person. Compare this with “I love a friday night steak at Peter Luger.” This tells me the person loves steak and a favorite restaurant.

Tells a Story

But being descriptive isn’t good enough. The goal of the profile is to tell a story. You want the person to be able to create an arc of who you are through your photos & copy. Stories are what stick in people’s minds not details.
